IVO KERDIĆ Exhibition extended till 10. 7. 2011.
130th anniversary of the artist birth

Ivo Kerdić (May 19, 1881 - October 27, 1953) is a great Croatian sculptor and still greater medal maker who reached the peak of his craft skills and creative power in the field of small scale sculpting.  But not only is the exhibition of a commemorative nature, it also has the characteristics of a discovery. Our intention is to present to the public numbers of consummate works from the very fertile oeuvre of this maker that are kept in the holdings of the Modern Gallery.  The celebration of the 130th birth of the artist is an occasion to bring some of the hidden treasure into the light of day and place it before the eyes of the public, and to draw to the attention of the discipline something of Kerdić’s distinctive creative work.  Along with a few sculptures, it is medals that comprise the bulk of his work.

These works are of a certainty a history or an analogy epitomising Zagreb and Croatian public life and its most important figures.  The exhibition will also give an insight into the scope and significance of Kerdić’s work during his half a century of prolific activity.  There are 650 of his medals in the holdings of the Modern Gallery – including medals, badges, decorations, coins – created in the period from 1905 to 1953, with more than 170 subjects.

The exhibition in May 2011 will convincingly enlarge our knowledge of Ivo Kerdić and define his place in the Croatian and European production of small scale sculpting and medals.

The Modern Gallery will put on this exhibition marking the 130th anniversary of the birth of Ivo Kerdić exclusively from its own holdings.  The author of the exhibition, Tatijana Gareljić, curator and manager of the MG Medals Collection, has chosen numerous Kerdić works previously unknown to the public, and the rest of the material can be said to have known almost the same fate.
