For art lovers this spring the Modern Gallery has prepared an outstanding pictorial delight, a retrospective exhibition of Josip Trostmann (Dubrovnik, 1938). This well-known Dubrovnik colourist, who for more than 50 years now has been transferring, with heart and paint, the leisurely and Arcadian atmosphere of his hometown setting onto every one of his canvases, sees painting as the joy of play and the apogee of life’s beauty. Inspired by Mediterranean nature and its brilliant light, he creates works that captivate with their ultimately concise drawing, sonorous colours and painterly poetics of a symbolic and abstract idiom. The more than 80 pictures displayed in the six rooms of the first floor of the Modern Gallery show the painter’s inheritance of Bonnard’s Post-Impressionism, his progress towards the abstraction of objective reality and a contemplative delving into motif, telling of the distinctive beauty and purity of Trostmann’s art of painting, which make him the bard of the new landscape ethos in Croatian contemporary painting.
The Modern Gallery is open for visitors on weekdays from Tuesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
