Modern Gallery, housed in the Revival style Vranyczany Palace, built in the 1880s in the heart of Zagreb to a plan by Viennese architect Otto Hofer, offers more than 750 outstanding modern, more modern and the most modern exhibits of painters, sculptors, medal-makers and multi-media artists embodying some of the high points of the Croatian fine arts from the 19th to the 21st century. From classics such as the painters Vlaho Bukovac, Miroslav Kraljević, Josip Račić, the sculptors Robert F. Mihanović, Ivan Meštrović, Ivo Kerdić, Frano Kršinić and Branislav Dešković to contemporary masters of the brush, chisel and new media, masterpieces of landscape, figurative and abstract art, portraits and animal sculpting, spatial installations and video art follow one after another.

In a set-up that is more dossier - than chronologically ordered, all the important phenomena, movements and individuals that built the modern national art history profile are shown, concluding with the master works of contemporary artists who have both made the reputation of the Croatian art scene and enriched recent production in Europe as a whole. The holdings of the Modern Gallery, with their more than 9,800 works, constitute the richest collection of Croatian fine art of the modern period and are an inexhaustible source for the understanding of its origins, development and contemporary achievements. With ongoing supplementation of the collections with new acquisitions, the permanent display is an ever more bountiful anthology of the fine arts and a site not to be missed for the deepening of knowledge concerning the Croatian art scene.
