Damir Facan Grdiša – Existence
May 19 – June 7 2015
On May 19, an exhibition of work by Damir Facan-Grdiša, a painter who took his BFA in the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the class of Ivo Friščić, will open in the Josip Račić Studio of the Modern Gallery. This freelance artist, member of the artists’ associations HDLU, ULUPUH and HZSU, executes commissions for the Croatian Conservation Institute and many publishing firms that feature his illustrations. In the Račić Studio, Grdiša will show the Zagreb arts world some ten watercolours. In the catalogue, Academician Tonko Maroević writes: “Although the set of motifs of Damir Facan-Grdiša is of a slightly SF origin, perhaps by way of film or comic strip, less probably through literature, his actual execution is closer to Gestalt illusionist or even Op Art tendencies. Particularly in compositions that are purged of any surplus of narrative ingredients, he is able to arrive at powerful juxtapositions of structures differentiated graphically and chromatically, at a dynamic polarisation of diversely tensioned parts, in a word at an effect that is visually attractive and even in a certain way sociologically and psychologically suggestive (as diagnosis of the human anthill or of the threat of universal disaster, although here we are opening up a digression with another possible interpretation)”.
The Damir Facan-Grdiša exhibition in the Josip Račić Studio will be on view until June 7, 2015.
