Art Workshops in the Modern Gallery in February, 2016

In February, the Modern Gallery is organising a number of creative-educational workshops for children and young people. We invite all those interested to join us this month too in the permanent display of the Modern Gallery (Hebrangova 1) and the Josip Račić Studio (Margaretska 3), in the exploration of works of modern art and in creative expression

Programme:

Art workshop: Merry Masks

Saturday, February 6, from 11 30 am to 1 pm

Modern Gallery

Art workshop related to the topical carnival maskers in which participants will make fanciful masks inspired by the merry motifs of Zlako Bourek and Zvonimir Lončarić.

Technique: mixed media

Age group: 4 to 12

Art workshop: Let your fancy go

Friday, February 12, from 4 30 pm to 6 pm

Modern Gallery

Each of the participants will get an envelope with identical simple visual elements. According to their associations, the members will express themselves creatively, drawing out the idea that the visual elements suggest. To gradual revelation of the imaginative pieces, we shall talk about the manner of their presentation.

Technique: coloured pencils

Age group: 6 to 14

Art workshop: Ready, steady, frame

Sunday, February 2, from 11 am to 12 30 pm

Josip Račić Studio – exhibition and participation free of charge

Prompted by the ongoing exhibition by Ivica Šiško, members of this workshop will learn about frames and how to frame scenes from everyday life.  What the artistic members of the workshop think is important to frame and immortalise will be revealed by painting the observed.

Technique: tempera

Age group: 6 to 14

Art workshop: Plastic Sculptures

Friday, February 12, from 4 30 pm to 6 pm, Modern Gallery

A sculpture workshop at which we shall show members how they can make sculptures from the most ordinary objects. We shall explore how to be creatively expressive using plastic cups.  Prompted by sculpture in the permanent display of the Modern Gallery, but making use of different material, the workshop participants will make their own sculptures.

Technique: plastic cups

Age group: 8 to 16

Art workshop: Imagined Image

Saturday, February 20, from 11 30 am to 1 pm

Modern Gallery

How does one make a painting if we only have a description to go on?

Participants will find out the answer to this question at an art workshop at which it is important to listen well and, from the description, draw the painting that they imagine.  After painting a painting from the description and motifs, they’ll do their best to find a painting that is exhibited in the permanent display.

Technique: tempera

Age group: 4 to 12

Art workshop:  Clues

Saturday, February 27, from 11 30 am to 1 pm

Modern Gallery

Following up clues in the Modern Gallery, those taking part in the art workshop by active exploration of the display will look for and discover works of painting. A new clue will be found by each work found. The point is to find all the clues and connect them with the works.  Once they have found them, the participants are going to create their own works, making use of selected clues.

Technique: mixed media, coloured pencils

Age group: 4 to 12

Art workshop: Associations

Sunday, February 28, from 11 30 am to 1 pm

Modern Gallery

In his paintings, Marino Tartaglia suggests a visual idea and message to the observer, which can be guessed at if the title is not read, making use of one’s own associations.  What the members of the workshop will see in Tartaglia’s works, and how we should interpret them, will be discovered at the workshop.  The visual task is to simplify ordinary objects into a new artistic form and explore what others see in it.
