Artworks from the holdings of the Modern Gallery on the facades of Zagreb’s buildings within the Julien de Casabianca Outings Project

Thanks to French artist Julien de Casabianca, in the last few days a good number of facades in the centre of Zagreb have been enhanced with interesting details, sections from the paintings of famous Croatian painters. This was a continuation of the Casabianca Outings project, started three years ago in Paris. He found the inspiration for this project in Paris in the Louvre; in Zagreb his inspiration was pictures from the holdings of the Modern Gallery, that great custodian of works of national art from the 19th century. The works were selected by twenty children from two elementary schools – the Izidor Kršnjavi and the Vladimir Nazor. They are exceptional works by Vlaho Bukovac, Josip Račić, Vjekoslav Karas, Tomislav Krizman and another 15 painting greats, whose figures have been interestingly temporarily incorporated into the visual identity of Zagreb.
In this project of his, the French visual artist and director aims at getting works out of the museum and onto the streets, making them still more accessible and linking the citizens of the individual town still more closely with the museum collections of their milieu. He has a unique technique: from the selected works, he chooses fragments, photographs and prints them on pieces of paper and then pastes them with biodegradable glue onto the facades and walls. He chose twenty locations for his project in Zagreb, pasting them onto the building of the French Embassy, the Modern Gallery, the Zagreb Puppet Theatre and many other prime spots. He was particularly pleased by the huge collage on the wall of Dolac produce market, on which he worked for two days. After the opening of the exhibition of photographs of his previous works in the French Institute Mediatheque, which will be on view until June 28, 2017, the artist strolled around the centre of Zagreb, and pointed out to the interested people some of the works that he had created during his fortnight’s stay.
The project in Zagreb was put on by the French Institute in Zagreb, in association with the Modern Gallery of Zagreb; it was produced with financial assistance from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the City Office for Education, Culture and Sport of Zagreb, and the Tourist Board of the city of Zagreb.
