French Institute in Croatia and Modern Gallery, Zagreb, Julien de Casabianca – Outings Project
OUTINGS is a participatory street art project created by the French photographer and filmmaker Julien de Casabianca. The Outings story began in 2014, while he was visiting the Louvre, and there was one lonely girl that caught his eye Mademoiselle Rivière painted by Ingres in 1806. “She was beautiful. She seemed lost amongst the many large paintings and looked bored”, says Casabianca. “I had a ‘Prince Charming’ impulse to free her from the frame and the museum.” This first collage on the streets of Paris has since led to hundreds of portraits from local museums being dispersed in cities around the world. Julien de Casabianca aims to do more than select portraits from museums, find interesting walls for the installations, and then photograph them. He strongly believes in engaging citizens in the process and has done so thanks to participatory workshops in cities across the world, encouraging inhabitants to connect to museum collections in their city. Thanks to the curator Stefani Markovic, the French Institute, the Modern Gallery in Zagreb and with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the City of Zagreb – the City Office for Education, Culture and Sports and the Zagreb Tourist Board, Julien de Casabianca is happy to be able to present his participatory art project in Zagreb. JULIEN DE CASABIANCA is French visual artist and movie maker. His work is always related to the street. Gao Xingjian, winner of a Nobel Prize in Literature, wrote for him his first movie, a short-film, Night after the rain, totally filmed in imaginary city streets. The pianist Yaron Herman created the original soundtrack. For his first feature-length, Passing by (2011), he shot anonymous passers-by during three years in the streets of 44 cities in 22 countries. This movie was hailed by the famous director Costa-Gavras. Passing by also became an art video installation on forty screens on the facade of the 4th District Paris city hall, inaugurated by Mrs Charlotte Rampling. In 2014, he initiated Outings Project, street art and photography work, which has brought him regular invitations from museums.
