About the exhibition
All Our Animals – Animals as Subjects in Croatian Modern Art
On March 9, 2017, the Modern Gallery opened the exhibition All Our Animals – Animals as Subjects in Croatian Modern Art. The exhibition, named after a piece of sculpture by Sofija Naletilić-Penavuša, is the most important project of the MG in the spring exhibition season. For this occasion, Dajana Vlajsavljević, MG museum advisor and manager of the Collection of 19th century painting up to 1898, selected an anthology of works, mostly from the extensive holdings of the Modern Gallery, and a few works from other museums in Croatia that were also relevant to the topic. The architect Mario Beusan was responsible for the design of the set up, which extended over eleven rooms in the grand first floor of the Vranyczany Palace. Over two hundred works were presented – sculptures, oil paintings, prints, works on paper and medals with animal subjects. Depictions of animals are the oldest theme in the history of human visual expression and have been an important part of Croatian visual art since the 19th century. This exhibition constitutes an appreciation of the body of relevant works of modern and contemporary times, and presents it to the Zagreb arts public, which has previously not had the chance to become familiar with the diversity of animalier art in Croatia, certainly not to this extent.
The best known artists whose works were shown at the exhibition are R. Frangeš-Mihanović, B. Dešković, M. Kraljević, O. Iveković, N. Mašić, C. Crnčić, N. Rojc, V. Filakovac, K. Hegedušić, Đ.
