A Tribute to Milan Steiner 1894-1918
paintings and drawings
September 10 to September 27 2015
In September the Modern Gallery is presenting a study exhibition to mark the 121st anniversary of the birth of the painter Milan Steiner. On this occasion three rooms on the grand first floor of the Vranyczany Palace will feature the artist’s oil paintings and drawings as well as archival material from the private collection of academician Josip Vaništa who have for decades cherished the bequest of Milan Steiner and his brother Ivo as well as the reputation of Steiner’s oeuvre and have taken care to familiarise the younger generations with the painting of this virtuoso who died tragically young.
“Every opportunity for an encounter with the works of Milan Steiner is outstanding, is more than welcome. There have not been many such chances, and the body of works of an artist who died when he was not quite 25 is neither extensive nor conducive to being shown frequently, particularly since most of the work has been preserved in delicate, rather intimate and fragile, techniques on paper. Nor has use been made of occasions related to the anniversaries of the painter’s life and death, or not sufficiently so, to set off a more frequent and systematic presentation of Steiner’s paintings, drawings, watercolours and pastels that constitute classic achievements and indubitable peaks of Croatian fine arts.” Tonko Maroević
