Munir Vejzović The Embrace of Sculpture and the Erotic
In September the Modern Gallery is presenting a monographic exhibition of the painter Munir Vejzović, The Embrace of Sculpture and the Erotic, at which eight-five of the best of his drawings, paintings and sculptures created in the last few decades are shown. The very rewarding series of new paintings includes large oils on canvas in which the artist, in the idiom of universal visual speech inherent to him, tests out the erotic sense of corporeality in the contemporary postmodernist multitude of its physical appearances. Showing himself as never before more of a painter than a draughtsman, Vejzović, in the new works, tells of an authentic process in the structuring of volume and the complete mastery of form that enable him assays with his own and other people’s conceptions of artistic point and purpose. To the drawings and prints that have long since been recognised as Vejzović’s forte has been added the work of painting that reflects the breadth and range of the artist’s morphological, technological and creative capacities, in which he endeavours, to achieve always different peaks of stylistically credible artistic creativity, in which endeavour he thoroughly succeeds. Most of the material for the exhibition consists of works from the painter’s studio and from private collections as well as of paintings from the MG holdings. Academician Tonko Maroević has devised the exhibition, overseen the set up and written the foreword in the catalogue, while art critics Nikola Albaneže and Milan Beslić have also written essays for the catalogue.
