Nikola Mašić, Noble Realist

The Modern Gallery put on an exhibition devised by MG museum adviser Dajana Vlaisavljević featuring a hundred or so oil paintings, studies, drawings and archival records which is the first integral presentation of the oeuvre of the originator of Croatian modern landscape painting and the first Croatian animalier painter. Observation and work in nature resulted in the many studies in Mašić’s painting that did not merely serve as preparations for the big genre compositions but were autonomous works in themselves. As well as including the best known of the artist’s genre compositions in what is called Embellished Realism, the exhibition will place the emphasis on works created in the 1870s and 1880s during Mašić’s occasional forays in Posavina and his periods spent studying in southern Italy.

Due to the exceptional public interest, the exhibition has been extended until February 24, 2019.
