Petar Pedro Maruna – Artistic horizons of a Painter with two homelands
On May 17 an exhibition of the painter Pedro Maruna will open in the Josip Račić Studio of the Modern Gallery. Maruna is reckoned one of the best of Spanish printmakers and the show will present a selection of twenty oils on canvas from the 1990s, selected by art historian Dr Marija Valčić.
Petar, or Pedro, Maruna was born in 1938 in Podgrađe near Zadar; he attended high school in Zagreb, and in the 1960s emigrated to Argentina. He studied at the Art Academy in Cordoba, and later at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid. The print is the medium in which this artist has created numbers of series, winning numerous prizes. From the 1980s, amalgamating his experiences to date, with a happy combination of drawing and printmaking, Maruna has synthesised his visual idiom and created paintings that captivate with the refined colourist orchestration of their surfaces.
