Portraits and Artworks. A Donation by Nino Vranić
The Portraits and Artworks. A Donation by Nino Vranić exhibition contextualises Vranić’s Portraits of Artists photography series with representative artworks that were created by the artists he portrayed and that are in the holdings of the National Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition of portraits of artists – such as Ferdinand Kulmer, Miljenko Stančić, Šime Vulas, etc. – alongside their artworks points to the breadth and richness of Croatia’s art scene in the second half of the 20th century. This comprehensive overview collection that encompasses Croatia’s classics (e.g., Vilko Gecan and Krsto Hegedušić), the greats (e.g., Edo Murtić, Branko Ružić or Dušan Džamonja) and the new generation that started exhibiting in the 1970s and 1980s (e.g., Vatroslav Kuliš, Dimitrije Popović, Dora Kovačević or Tamara Ukrainčik as the youngest amongst them) underscores the existence of a unique creative synergy between the portrayed and the portraitist which was based on true understanding and mutual respect.
In 2015 photographer Goran Vranić fulfilled his father’s wish and donated – on behalf of the Vranić family – a series of 48 portraits of artists from the Portraits of Artists photography series to the National Museum of Modern Art. Following the inaugurally conceived exhibitions from the donations of Dalibor Parać and Slavko Šohaj, the Portraits and Artworks exhibition in correlation with Vranić’s series represents a true treasure and is of exceptional importance for the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art. From the first portraits he took in the 1960s to the exhibition at the Vjekoslav Karas Gallery in Karlovac in 1997, Nino Vranić closely followed the numerous trends on Croatia’s contemporary art scene for decades. The development of Croatia’s contemporary art scene in Vranić’s time is evidenced by 48 works of art donated to the museum in 2015, as well as by the 1973 Self-Portrait, which was photographed in accordance with the concept of the same series, and which was donated to the museum by the Vranić family in December 2020 during preparations for the Portraits and Artworks. A Donation by Nino Vranić exhibition.
