WATER 2016

.

Water is one of the most important substances in our life and from our very earliest childhoods we become acquainted with its various properties, its advantages and drawbacks and potentialities. Members of the Photography Section of ULUPUH, the Croatian Association of Artists of the Applied Arts, have for four years now been showing their visions of water – some in black and white, some in colour; some show the real world, others elaborate their images of water virtually; some shoot with a camera and film, some with a digital machine, while some even shoot without a camera at all. Some show pretty and serene pictures, while others make us sad with the severe, sometimes even tragic, consequences of the power of water; they show us water in drops and jets, as frozen crystals or as ice; it falls on our head as rain or snow; they show us water in rivers, lakes, seas and oceans, even in bottles.  We have not even begun to list  all the things photographers register when they take shots in or on the water – dinghies and boats, cities, portraits of loved ones, nudes, the submarine world, storms and floods. It is interesting how much some words immediately make us think of water – coast, shore, beach, fish, ship, pier, lighthouse, wave, cascade, fountain and many others.

At this year’s exhibition, WATER 2016, 38 photographers of ULUPUH, inspired by some new detail or characteristic of water, show us ever new pictures of this vital substance.
